Carved Moose Antler and Katalox Tibetan Support Spindle

**Due to export restrictions of wildlife materials, we cannot ship products crafted from antler outside of the U.S.**

This beautiful Tibetan style support spindle has a 1 1/2 inch moose antler whorl that Dave has carved with his signature leaf motif. He crafted the 10 1/2 inch long shaft from katalox. The weight of this spindle is 1.4 ounces (41 grams).

When constructing his spindles, Dave mounts the spindle whorl blank on the shaft, and then turns and shapes the whorl and shaft together to achieve a well balanced spindle. In addition, he further spin balances each spindle by embedding a counterweight, when needed, in the underside of the whorl. He also spin balances them in one of our ceramic inserts.

**Moose antlers are naturally shed each year, so no moose were harmed to create this spindle.**

Moose Antler Ogham Blessing Whorl Support Spindle

"A blessing on the soul" is the inscription that Dave has carved into the 1 1/2 inch diameter moose antler whorl of this Takli support spindle.  This 8th century Ogham blessing was first discovered on an ancient spindle whorl in Buckquoy, Birsay, Orkney, Scotland in 1970.

The ebony shaft measures 9 1/2 inches in length, and the weight of this beautiful handspinning tool is 0.9 ounces (25 grams).  Additional photos can be seen in our Etsy shop.

Carved Moose Antler Burr and Ebony Bottom Whorl Drop Spindle

Dave has made this unique 1.8 ounce bottom whorl drop spindle from the burr of a moose antler. There is only one burr at the base of each antler (two per moose), and they are very heavy and dense. Dave decided this notched 2 inch whorl was so heavy it was best used as a bottom whorl.  The ebony shaft measures 10 inches in length, which includes the brass hook.  More photos can be seen at the Etsy.com listing for this spindle.

Monday

Carved Tagua Nut and Walnut Bead Support Spindle

This gorgeous carved tagua nut and walnut bead support spindle measures 10 1/4 inches in length overall and weights 1.0 ounces. Dave has carved the tagua nut, which is sometimes referred to as vegetable ivory, with his signature leaf motif.

**Please note that carved tagua nut ivory support spindles will be limited in availability and can only be purchased when they are listed in our Etsy Shop. I cannot take orders for this spindle since finding the right ivory nut for a bead spindle is a random process. Only one nut in many might be good enough for carving a bead whorl. The reliability of being able to make one on demand is not sufficient enough for me to take orders from customers or even predict when the next one will be available. When I make one, I will just post it for sale.**

Cherry and Birch Bottom Whorl Drop Spindle

Beautifully carved checkering adorns the Cherry whorl of this bottom whorl drop spindle. The whorl measures three inches in diameter. The twelve inch Birch shaft has a "Notch and Slot", also known as a T-notch and a brass bumper. The weight of this spindle is 1.9 ounces.
If you enjoy using a half hitch instead of a hook on your drop spindle, but don't like having to spin off the side of your spindle top, you need a "Notch and Slot". Dave has carved a few of these on special requests from customers and has decided to offer the unique tip on some of his spindles here on Etsy. The notch allows you to firmly attach your half hitch loop and the slot allows your yarn to spin suspended on "dead center" of the spindle tip. The half hitch is quick to attach and quickly comes free without fumbling. The "Notch and Slot" is also ideal on these longer shaft spindles when you want to spin by rolling off the thigh and not having to worry about the hook catching on your clothes.

Saturday

Unique Hand Carved Classical Sewing Threadwinder

Dave has handcrafted and carved this walnut thread winder and storage barrel in a classical style. Overall it is 5 ¼ inches long, and features a winder and a barrel to protect and keep your thread clean.
This fiber art tool is different from older thread winder/holders where the barrel is held on by a screw on/off finial, as this winder is MAGNETIC!!! (ask Dave who's idea THAT was! LOL) Dave inset a hidden small powerful rare earth magnet in the end of the winder and fixed another inside the end of the barrel. Just insert the winder into the barrel and it SNAPS the unit firmly closed. This one of a kind tool has been initialed and dated by Dave. More photos can be found at the Ebay auction listing.
