We added two new top whorl drop spindles to our Etsy shop today that featured fossil mammoth ivory inlay. The one on the right which was crafted from cocobolo and rosewood is still available. Each piece of fossil mammoth ivory is unique, making these spindles truly one of a kind.

Native Totem Spool Knitter

This four brass pin totem spool knitter , also called a knitting nancy, was inspired and adapted from actual Native American symbol pictographs and rock art. Dave crafted it from poplar wood, with purpleheart and rosewood accents. It is approximately 4 ½ inches tall and is accompanied by a 5 ¼ inch loop lifter made of purpleheart wood with a truestone turquoise accent ring.

The deity Kokopelli plays his flute and dances around the bottom of the knitter while above him, four Shaman hold hands and also dance in a circle to his music. Above them ,various native spiritual or mystical symbols circle the knitter. While Kokopelli is mostly known as a fertility deity, he is also known as a “spirit of music”. Dave has hand crafted this 3 inch lace tatting shuttle out of Honduras Rosewood. On one side, he will scrimshaw your personal initial (only one initial please). Scrimshaw on Ivory Celtic Drop Spindle

This is a little spindle Dave has been working on over a period of time. Not exactly your wooden toy wheel and dowel rod spindle, is it?

This is a 1.0 ounce top whorl spindle, with the whorl measuring 1 7/8 inches. The length, not including the brass top hook, measures 7 inches. The wood is a beautiful East Indian Rosewood and the intricate Celtic design has been scrim'd on ancient Russian mammoth ivory. This spindle has been initialed and dated by Dave, the maker, on the bottom of the whorl. This spindle is currently up for auction on Ebay.

Lace Bobbin Pin Pusher/Lifter

Dave turned this lace pin pusher/lifter tool from joined Rosewood, Maple Burl and ancient Mammoth Ivory. It is 4 ½ inches long and has been initialed by Dave, the maker.

Mammoth Ivory Bodkin Nalbinding Needle with Case

This larger ivory nalbinding needle is 4 inches long and comes with a Rosewood case. Larger needles are used for projects using heavier materials such as for nalbinding rugs. Dave hand carved this out of a shard of ancient woolly mammoth ivory from Siberia Russia. He used a new pen case he had on hand and fashioned a engraved brass needle to mount on the top of the case, making it a neat presentation gift or treat for yourself. The ivory is at least 10,000 years old. It is initialed by Dave, the maker.

Gothic Style Double Tatting Shuttle

If you collect handmade tatting shuttles you won't want to miss this one. This is similar to the bone double shuttle Dave recently auctioned, except he carved this one out of East Indian Rosewood. After inlaying four mother of pearl diamonds and mammoth ivory center dots, it came out with a very Gothic looking design. It is 3 1/2 inch long, initialed and dated by Dave, the maker.

Handmade Rosewood Lucet with Fine Silver Inlay

Dave hand crafted this cord making lucet out of East Indian Rosewood and inlayed it with a filigree disk of fine silver. This lucet measures 2 inches wide by 4 inches long. JoAnna makes the fine silver filigree inlay discs using Precious Metal Clay. She molds the metal clay and then kiln fires it to 1650 degrees. The organic clay binder burns away melting the fine silver particles into 99.9% pure silver. Dave carved a round recess into the lucet and inset the silver disc to a near flush level. It is initialed and dated by Dave.

Midland Bobbin with Mammoth Ivory Accents

Dave turned this 4 inch Midland bobbin out of East Indian Rosewood, maple burl and ancient woolly mammoth ivory. The rosewood looks almost black but is actually a very deep deep deep purple the color of black plum. It has been drilled for a spangle.

Scrimshaw on Ivory Lace Picot Gauge/Ruler

Another neat little lace tool for your collection! Dave made this little ruler out of ancient mammoth ivory with little Rosewood finger grips.

The measuring increments for picots are 1/16 inch by 2 inches. The width is ¼ inch so you can use it has a ¼ inch picot gauge. The back is scrimshawed with an oak leaf and acorn motif. Dave also carved an oak leaf fob out of fossil ivory and Jo has beaded the fob with garnets. This piece has been initialed and dated by Dave.

Lil Rascal Handy Winder Tatting Shuttle

Dave's hands are large and when he makes these petite 2 ¼ inch shuttles he has trouble holding on to them so he started calling them his “Lil Rascals”. He thought that some tatters who like the small shuttles may have the same problem while loading them with thread so he has added a handy screw-in finger holder to help you load the shuttle. He wishes he could take credit for inventing this but alas, it is based on a design by a German shuttle maker. He also wishes he could say these are easy to make, but as you might guess, they take a bit of engineering so he can't predict how often he will be putting them up for auction.

This petite shuttle is made from Birdseye Maple and the eye patterns stand out very clearly. You will note that the shuttle does not have the usual thread hole in the post. This is because the screw receiver had to be inset into the shuttle post to receive the threaded handle. Dave turned the handle from joined East Indian Rosewood, Birdeye Maple and colorful celluloid accent rings.
